Help Keane Win the BT Digital Music Awards

well, if you receive the KWN from the official site of keane (http://www.keanemusic.com/), you should have notice that they havent send you it for a long time...
So they apoligie, they said that it's written, but there doesn't seem to be anyone at the Mass Email Fulfillment Logistics Centre to send it out. they feel sorry about that. They'll get it out to you as soon as they can.

And they ask you to help them to glory in the BT Digital Music Awards If you've enjoyed what they've done on the Keane official site over the last year - the live blogs, the fans' pictures, the on-the-road blogs, Richard's photos, interviews with the band, the KWN etc etc - then they'd be very grateful if you could vote for them for Best Official Website at the BT Digital Music Awards. Tim Talks With KM.COM About Their Cover

Tim tells us about the band's special cover version

To celebrate its 40th birthday, BBC Radio 1 are releasing a compilation featuring forty contemporary artists each covering a track from between 1967 and 2006. Keane were given 1981 and chose to cover 'Under Pressure' by Queen and David Bowie, a Number One hit in November of that year. The band's cover will be premiered on Jo Whiley's show on Tuesday September 25th, with the compilation album released the following Monday, October 1st. We called up Tim to get the lowdown on the track.

Hi Tim. How did you come to cover 'Under Pressure'?
After Radio 1 gave us 1981, we basically compiled a huge list of songs from that year. We had all the weekly Top 10s, plus a fascinating list of what the overall best sellers from the year were. Two were by Shakin Stevens, two were by Adam and the Ants and then there were novelty tracks like 'The Birdie Song' by the Tweets and 'Shaddup You Face' by Joe Dolce.

Not a particularly rich saem to chose from then?
Well, there were some pretty shocking songs, but there were some great tracks that year too. John Lennon's 'Imagine' was one of the biggest sellers, because he died at the end of 1980, and 'Woman' was in there too. Actually, Richard says that his first memory was hearing that this guy called John Lennon had been shot. Then there were big songs from bands like the Police, Blondie, XTC and Ultravox. Plus, of course, an awful lot of shit that we'd never heard of.

But eventually you plumped for Queen.
Yeah. We're all big Queen fans and spent a lot of our childhoods listening to them. I remember Tom used to do impressions of Freddie Mercury. In fact, Tom's the biggest Queen fan in the band and when we were told we had 1981, he suggested 'Under Pressure' pretty much immediately. So then we spent ages looking at the list of tracks, weighing up the options and eventually came back to that one. It was just the one that we were most desperate to get our teeth into. And once we started playing it, we really started to realise what an amazing song it is. I think you get a very different appreciation of a song when you play it than when you listen to it.

The original track featured two vocalists - Freddie Mercury and David Bowie. How did you deal with that on the cover?
The original idea was actually to get someone else in to do Bowie's part. But then when we were in North America in May, we started recording it. We did two sessions, in Toronto and Philadelphia, and we ended up with all three of us singing on it. We were huddled around a microphone, doing the handclaps and finger clicks too. We had so much fun with it. And when we finished, we realised we were happy with it like that, with just our vocals on it.

Should we be able to hear all three of you distinctly?
I certainly can. But then we also went for like a massed backing vocal effect too. The end result sounds really big.

Does Tom sound like Freddie?
Actually, he does a really good impression of him and we kept having to tell him to tone it down and sing like himself! He's such a huge Queen fan, it really was a dream assignment for him.

So are you pleased with the finished cover?
Yeah, really pleased. We reocrded it very quickly, but we had loads of fun doing it. It was a real collaboration between the three of us and there was so much energy and excitement in the studio. To be honest, I think it rhas eally inspired us for future recordings. And I think the song's turned out great. I'm really quite proud of it.
Keane First Official Intreview

Two and a quarter hours with Keane fly by, the evening's enjoyable and the talk interesting, the beer, well it's the same as everywhere else. But I'm not working for CAMRA and in a bar such as this asking for a 'pint-a-bitta' would probably cause a frown or two and end up with me being barred for taking the piss. To put Keane's musical career into perspective they've been together for 6 years, they've grown up as Keane, they've learnt their instruments as Keane and they've learnt to shave as Keane! I look for clues, facial similarities - none, scars on their wrists the signs of mysterious blood-brother rituals - none. As I walk round the table to buy some drinks I glance at their scalps to check for the sign of Beelzebub, I see no hint of them selling their souls to the Devil. They have the closeness of brothers and the knowing looks of married couples, I'm dealing with a tight knit community, I'm the outsider but still welcome.

Keane are Tom Chaplin - Vocals & Guitar, Dom Scott - Lead Guitar & Keyboards, Tim Rice-Oxley - Bass & Keyboards and Richard Hughes - Drums. They take their name from a female acquaintance - the role she played is unimportant but she was inspirational to them in their formative years. The nucleus of the band formed at school, Dom and Tim recruited Richard to play drums and Tom joined later as Dom puts it 'because we discovered none of us could sing!' but only after his voice had broken. The line up has remained the same since.

Richard
Richard starts, "We've only been serious about being musicians for the past year, for the preceding five years we were just dabbling. Our first rehearsal took place two days after we found somewhere to practice, but we couldn't even play our instruments." He pauses, Tim takes over, "Everything we've learnt, we've learnt together and that's what binds the band together. It's a shared experience from day one." The band has evolved into musicians writing songs of quality. Their first EP 'Call Me What You Like' features three excellent tracks, none of which you'd consider a filler. To make comparison something I'm never keen on doing - put them in a slightly heavier category than Elbow and I am Kloot but with more electrics and piano and stronger hooks, dare I say it even at times like James.

Tom, vocally challenged?
Not according to the H&A
The musical journey really started with their first proper gig at the Hope & Anchor - The starting blocks for many a famous band over the years. Tom's previous experiences with his inadequate PA meant he's now labeled as the loudest singer that the H&A mixing desk has ever dealt with, no matter how low they turned him down he was so used to shouting out his vocals that he was still drowning out the rest of the band. Best gig so far was their support slot for Maximum Roach an Apollo440 spin off at Barfly in Camden. They reacted to the positive audience. A lot of people had come to see them, friends of friends of friends, the first time it really happened for them. People coming up and talking to them whom they didn't know and the first time that they'd heard their songs being sung with them. Their secret was out.... or had it always been out but now it was worth knowing it?

Tom
Where do you see yourselves in a year's time? I ask. "It's tricky" says Tom, "it depends on how well the new single impacts on people, we're also doing our own 8 track stuff to back it up, hopefully settling down to record an album then a tour, long term plans are to produce really great albums, but in a year even just being another step closer to being a really good band. I think that's what basically drives us, to be interesting and get our music out to as many people as possible and inspire them. We have confidence in ourselves and in less than a year's time we should be able to convince people that we can do great stuff and people will know we can do it." Tim laments the fact that "Every day we spend sitting in our jobs we wish we could be doing our music, you only have one life and it's a shame to do a mundane boring job." Prompting Tom to reply "But you have to make sacrifices because you know that it will pay off eventually. It probably wont be as rosy as it looks but it least it will be rewarding." We pause and whilst I think that I've come to do an interview I believe I'm actually chairing an open forum in a young offenders institute and I'm the seasoned lag who's doing life, whilst my fellow forum members will be passing through and onto greater crimes. A philosophical Dom commands our attention and simply says "I think Tom's summed it up very well" Philosopher he may be but with the affinity he has with a guitar I'm sure he'll have many a closet guitarist wondering how he teases some of those notes through his pick ups. Obviously a sign that while most of us were making a fuss of ourselves in our rooms during our teenage years Dom was busy in his room making a fuss of his guitar and in doing so abusing his parents & neighbours with his strumming!

It's now time to test the limits of Keane's comfort zone so I play my ace.
Fact: Jimi Hendrix was once lower down the bill than some performing Seals, fact: you've supported Chesney Hawkes, will that come back to haunt you? I then reach into my pocket and produce a 56oz raw steak and with a deft flick of the wrist slapped one of them unexpectedly in the face with it! Well judging by a couple of expressions you'd have thought I had.

Tim
A surprised Richard "How did you find out about that?" Head slightly bowed Tom, "I didn't actually see him but I'm very proud of the fact I supported Chesney". Unfazed Dom: "I thought it was our proudest moment, we found out about it on the day." Looking for back-up Richard: "Well the fact is that in 1998 we were supported by Coldplay…" at which point Tim interjects, "Gig-wise it was pretty surreal but he didn't play the 'One & Only,' however he is a reasonably talented musician." Dom: "He was a complete arse." Richard: "In the bar there were all these people who had come to see this 'legend' play this really small club, several thousand Keane fans were turned away at the door, only the difference was that now the Chesney fans were old enough for legal sex." Richard: "There is talk of us supporting the Scorpions on their next tour, which I'm looking forward to" and Tom finally boasts "They've got me in as a session whistler."

The laughter subsides, my research was correct and although Dom has decreed that Chesney is an arse I do feel that there is some mutual respect for him. The last thing Keane needs is disgruntled Chesney fans picketing the next Keane gig (Chezheads or Cheznettes whatever you call yourselves details at the end of the article if you do wish to do so)

Dom
We move on before we become immersed in a piss take of immense proportions and I assert my right as facilitator to bring us back to the relevant issues. I enquire what's happening at the moment with Keane? "A second single's being worked on at the moment with Mark Wallis of Travis/Smiths fame, he's guiding us through the whole process, he has a great musical brain, he has already influenced us," says Richard "he's outside the band and he's a fresh pair of ears, you can bounce ideas off him, we're learning on the hoof." Did you have to pay him wads of cash? Tom: "No he turned up at a gig and said he could do something with us, which he has off his own back. It's good that we're working with someone like Mark because we can identify with the Smiths who were a great English band; we have the same mindset as them. He can translate our sound onto record. He was the first person to say 'I like your music I can do something with it' whereas everyone else was just saying 'we're really interested in your music.' He talks about what is great music. when we heard the first mix of the single we had this burning desire to jump up and down, Mark captures our sound. He talks the same language as us." So what do you want to achieve with this latest single? I ask, Tom answers "It's about getting our music out to more people . . .. whoever it is. If it's random punter or a record company who can take us to the next realm."

Last News Of Keane

->Rob Iberian Blog

Keane's tech man/photo hero reports from the final gigs of the 'Under The Iron Sea' tour

Well, that's the end of that then.

I'm off to the job centre now but before I go here are a random selection of pictures from a fabulous and sleep deprived final weekend Under The Iron Sea.

(Oh .. note to booking agents: send bands to hot countries more please. Thanks!)

This is what Tom sees during the final chorus of 'A Bad Dream' - but in colour. I feel a fact-ridden blog coming on, I'm afraid. Tour facts: Keane performed 104 shows in 15 months.

Tim's gear awaits Porto - a town rich in sun, heat and beer. But obviously horrible traffic - the promoter assured us that the generator technician was 'in his car and nearly here' for 8 whole hours. We almost forgave him when he eventually arrived - but only because he looked like Earl from My Name is Earl.

If you want to play the piano like Mr Rice-Oxley then here are those all important CP70 settings. I can't tell you the difference between the black and white keys though - sorry.

Simply because we could we took a mid afternoon break and nipped down to the beach.

Here video genius and ladies' favourite ASBO gets splashed about by the Atlantic. He's still looking for love and any last minute requests for dates from female (that bit is important) Keane fans would be appreciated.

Handsome production manager Ant and stage manager Mickey dip their toes in the 'refreshing' (read: freezing) surf. Mickey fact: those big boys need size 14 shoes - special order items.

Back to work: Kinks fans will know why I call this one 'Portaloo Sunset'

Last match of the season for Keane Crew FC. L-R: soundman Iain, audio tech Tom, single video tech ASBO, stage manager Mickey and drum tech Scott - who seems to be on the phone.

Keane get to the last B stage of the tour.

Richard on the plane to El Ejido the next morning (it was too far for our trusty tour busses to manage unfortunately).

Tom catches up on sleep...

... while Richard and I swap lenses and make the time fly by talking about cameras (geek fact: I'm using his Nikkor 85mm f1.4 and he's got his mitts on my pinholey lens-in-a-cap) ...

.... and Tim's watching a dvd. And smiling. In fact that's more of a grin isn't it?

Tom's now blocking the aisle. Hmf.

On arrival Richard takes advantage of a delay at the half-built airport to take some pictures of bricks.

Keane own two sets of gear so that we can make logistically difficult shows like these. A few specialist pieces 'float' between the two systems, like the laptops that run all Tim's sounds (shown here - well the boxes that contain them are shown here, to be precise) and .. um .. ASBO's camping chair.

Tim's enjoying the atmosphere on the airport bus. That's a lame caption isn't it? The full story features a locked gate, a man in a stripey shirt, some runaway baggage carts and a policeman on a moped.

*fast forward a few hours*

Guitar tech Sideshow Bob has whittled a bow and arrow out of the pot plants in the crew room. A fine effort.

*fast forward still more*

Apologies to the citizens of El Ejido. I didn't get any pictures of the show. Oops - it was a final scorcher though.

*fast forward again through not enough hours sleep and yet another flight that had run out of tikka wraps - boo!*

We're back at Gatwick and waiting for bags for an hour.

Can I ask a favour of BAA, operator of Gatwick and other UK airports? Hire more baggage handlers. If that's not possible then open a coffee shop in the baggage hall and you'll soon make even more money without improving the utterly lamentable quality of your customer service.

Sorry for the rant but at least I now feel better.

Richard takes a picture of me taking a picture of Tom and handsome production manager Ant.

And here she is: my final shot of the tour. It's of merch man Kyle, Tim, some random holiday maker and Tom.

Until next time,

Rob

Ana´s review of keane´s gig

Hi there!!
i´m very happy, i think anyone can imagine how im feeling... so i´m going to write how was my trip to Oporto and what i thought of the gig, and everyting else.

i woke up in the morning of 3rd August wondering if the gig was real, i couldn´t believe that there were only a few hours until the gig. I finally was going to see and listen them. It was my dream coming truth. I just left my house at 3pm, and me and my parents left my sister in my grandfather´s house. The trip was calm and fast, I went reading Harry Potter, almost half of the book i read in the car, and i talked with a friend by sms too. When we arrived to Oporto we went to the hotel to leave the things, the hotel was called Mercure, I already have been there with my grandfather. After that i said to my parents that i wanted to go to the "Queimódromo" as soon as possible...I wanted to be there to meet paty, to be closer to them...

When we arrived there i couldnt believe what i was seeing, oh god, there was the biggest line i´ve ever seen...fortunality i didnt need to be there cause my father payed to put the car in the park, so the line was smaller. When i entered, at 8pm or more, i called paty, and we met. I was so nervous, I just could think if he was going to look at me, if i was going to have the honour to be touched by him, if he was going to notice my presence...

Ez special started and I, who normally like to listen to them, and who even like some of their songs, just could pray for one of them to break a leg and go away....lool
I think they were not too bad, but of course, compared to keane they´re nothing.
When Ez Special finally finished, keane had delayed almost half an hour, but when they had appeared I almost died...Oh my God I finally was seeing them, and they started with The Iron Sea...well you already know the order of the songs if you read paty´s text so... i´m just going to tell what i felt in some musics...
The Iron Sea- bacause was the first i was complety happy and at the same time i couldn´t believe that was real. Even now, I can´t.
Everybody´s Changing- this is a song that everybody knows, and everyone was singing along with them, it was beautiful
Put It Behind You/Bend and Break- these songs are more "moved" and i love the 2nd one.
Try Again- this song is beautiful, i think Tom sang this music with a lot of emotion, it was really awsome...now i like this song a lot more than before.
Your Eyes Open/ The Frog Prince/ Hamburg Song/ Fly To Me- these songs were sang in the "passerelle", they were so close, and at the same time so far... but i loved when they were there... Tom is even more beautiful in reality than in the photos...i couldn´t see anyone else, but Tom...I was all the time looking at him :D
Leaving So Soon/This Is The Last Time/A Bad Dream/Somewhere Only We Know/ Is It Any Wonder?/ Broken Toy- all these songs are beautiful, i love the 1st and 3rd ones, was wonderful to listen them, and i loved the poem too( the poem appeared in the "ecrã"/poster/"placar"(i dont know how to say =S) right before the song A Bad Dream)
Atlantic/Crystal Ball/Bedshaped- before they played these songs they get out of the stage, possibly to drink some water and to rest, and i almost thought that that had been the end...but it wasn´t. They played these songs and when they left again, i waited some time, maybe they could return...but they didnt...=(

I loved the gig, it was the best thing that could happen in my whole life...
I´m going to remember this moment for ever...

My Review Of All My First Keane Gig

The trip for Oporto take more than 3 hours. I saw many beautiful things.. I saw one terrible acident with some cars.. I made my first and unique stop in 'Mealhada' who is famous 'cause they have a excellent sucking pig.I don't like but continue..

When I finally was in Oporto me and my family had to met my godfather 'cause he worked there in that day. We visited 'Dolce Vita' and I really loved that shopping..

When we decided to go to Queimódromo for the line to enter.. Oh My God! There was more than 30 people in my front and more than 70 on my back. I hope I'm not saying any lie.

The 'Queimódromo' was to open at 5pm.. but.. NOTHING! Was to open at 6pm.. NOTHING! Was to open at 7pm.. NOTHING! Then finally open at 8pm.. After I was on the line many hours.. With some stupid girls saying stupid things with stupid pronunciation..GOD! They're terrible! They didn't know very well the lyrics.. They talked laudly on the line.. Everyone look at them.. Thanks God I wasn't with them.. When they started put the people on the 'Queimódromo' was very fast. 10 Minutes after they start I was in.. Giving My tickets to the man to enter there.. There was very hot.. I think 34ºC when the maximum for yesterday was 31ºC. I Waited for my cousin and my little brother and we ran very fast to try to find one place on the front.. TOO LATE! Well.. For them.. I started crying 'cause a stupid man didn't care about the most little.. He was so unfair! STUPID MAN! I found a friend of mine,Beatriz or Bi.. And she was on the right near the 'passerelle' of Keane... I stay there and Ana came with me for that place.. We were so Happy! The first time started at 09.30 pm I think.. It wasn't so good as I thought. Was EZ Special.. To say the true.. Nothing special.. They're nothing alive.. I prefered to see 'Fingertips' or other thing better. But it wasn't so bad at all.. Bad was.. But not the worst! At 10.15 pm or 10.30 pm I started listen something I knew.. When I discovered (just 2 seconds) Tim was on the 'placar' and playing the famous start Keane Gig 'THE IRON SEA'. After it was 'Everybody's Changing','Put It Behind You','Bend And Break' and 'Try Again'.. Yes! It was perfect! Everyone singing this song that means very much to me! I almost cry but I was to happy for it!. They went to the passerelle Richard was with his back from me! He said goodbye and saw the view with his hand.. And I said 'I Love You,Richard!' more than 3 times but he didn't discoevered it was me! Then me and Bi,started singing like: 'Tim can you handle this.. Richard can you handle this.. Tom can you handle this.. We don't think you can handle this!' They started very embarassed but they continue and started singing 'Your Eyes Open', 'The Frog Prince','Hamburg Song' and 'Fly To Me'. In 'Fly To Me' Richard ran into his drumms and Tom and Tim have been there singing that song. Amazing! Then all were on the principal stage we started listening: 'Leaving So Soon?' In this song I started don't have voice,'This Is The Last Time','A Bad Dream' that song was the special surprise! Tom said we'll listen the english version and on the 'placar' we could read the translation of the poem. The poem is really beautiful! Amazing! Fantastic! Everyone with their voices sang, sang and sang. After this we listened:'Somewhere Only We Know','Is It Any Wonder?' I started thinking about Marina,Jessica,my cousin Sheila and all the people who like keane and tought about me.. Then.. Almost in the end of my BEST GIG EVER! 'Broken Toy','Atlantic' with the fans voices was one of the most beautiful things I ever listen; 'Crystal Ball' and finally this amazing song 'Bedshaped'.. All the people colaborating with 'Uoooooh!' Simply perfect! Then I had to go.. 'Cause I had to be in Lisboa very soon. I'm woke up starting at 4am I think.. I only slept a few minutes on the trip returning to Lisboa. I'm not asleep. I'm excellent! It seems I just woke up a few minutes ago!

This was amazing!

Now some photos! They're so good..
Mainly of Tom.. He was so energetic and he didn't stop anytime of the gig! Running.. Shaking.. Jumping.. Dancing.. Singing.. Smiling.. GOD! He smiled very much! All the time! I think he wasn't expect that.
Richard had a very beautiful smile the most beautiful thing was his smile 'cause when he smiled he showed his teeth and prove how much happy he was. He like what he do! He smiled very much to Tim and Tom.
Tim.. Tim was happy but it seems to be he was tired. It's normal. The genious needs relax.. He smiled he was happy but he was tired. I saw it on the end! Mainly Tom and Tim. Richard too but not as Tom and Tim.

Mr Rice-Oxley writes ahead of this weekend's shows

Hello again

We're supposed to be working on new songs this week, but frankly our work ethic is leaving a bit to be desired. We spent most of yesterday at the bowling alley, locked in an epic battle to knock some sticks over with a big ball. It was a close contest, but I'm very pleased to say I got the highest score, with a deft 180. Experienced ten pin bowlers among you - I'm sure there are many - will be able to tell me whether that's a good score or not. I suspect not.

Slightly more importantly, we have the last two shows of the UTIS tour coming up. Always a pleasure to visit Spain and Portugal, but I think it's going to be quite emotional this time. It's hard to believe the tour is finishing already. It seems like only a few weeks ago we were rehearsing up the UTIS songs in London and taking to the stage at ULU somewhat nervously. This year, in particular, has gone by incredibly quickly, and has definitely been our most enjoyable and memorable run of tours and shows to date. And, of course, the buzz of the massive London show a few days ago has only left us wanting more. Ah well, we'll just have to make sure we go out with a couple of great gigs this weekend. On past experience, I've a feeling the crowds will be up for it! See you there...
